Employee Engagement

One-hour Ukulele Workshop – “You Can Uke”
Benefits: Improved communication, collaboration and employee bonding. An ideal workshop to add energy to a company retreat or all-day meeting.

The ukulele has only four strings (the guitar has six) which makes it easy to learn even for those with no musical training or experience.
Participants learn how to hold the ukulele, strumming techniques, how to read chord sheets, how to play 2 chords and how to play and sing 2-3 songs together.

We provide ukuleles, Hawaiian leis, Hawaiian shirts, flower hair accessories, chord sheets with lyrics.
Our clients provide meeting space, (indoors or outdoors) chairs, whiteboard or flip chart and snacks for participants.

2-hour Ukulele Workshop – “Ukulele Rock Star”
Benefits: All the bonding and improved communication of the 1-hour workshop, plus the collaborative exercise of forming a band and the stretch of performing in front of co-workers.

Participants learn how to hold the ukulele, strumming techniques, how to read chord sheets, 3 chords and they sing 2-3 songs. They’re divided into small groups of 3-5 people to learn a song together and then perform it for the whole group. This exercise raises the stakes and helps the teams gel as they learn to work together. Debriefing questions: How did the individual role each band member played contribute to the band’s overall success? How does this relate to the day-to-day workplace?

3-hour Ukulele Workshop – “Ukulele Songwriting Camp”
Benefits: Problem solving, innovation, plus team bonding and collaboration. This one is the most effective in helping your team work better together.

All the fun and benefits of the two-hour workshop with extra time to learn more chords and songs. We include the band exercise from the 2-hour workshop and also a songwriting exercise in small groups of 3-5: Groups may be challenged to write in a foreign language or to write in a particular genre. This workshop really allows team members to get to know each other and appreciate everyone’s talents. As a result, there is likely to be more trust and acceptance on the team, and an ease in working together.

The Art of the Singing Telegram
Benefits: Thinking outside the box, innovation and creativity, risk taking, team bonding. Perfect for sales teams, who are often extroverts and enjoy performing. Also useful for introverts ready to take the plunge and try something new.
One workshop and one performance. Each is 2 to 3 hours.  The workshop helps participants create a character, select a song or poem and practice the singing telegram. The performance is for family and friends so they can see everyone perform their singing telegrams.

NOTE: You do not have to be a good singer to do a singing telegram. We provide a selection of easy songs, poems, limericks, rap songs, etc. that everyone can perform. A successful telegram is more about connecting and having fun than being a perfect singer.

We include an exercise in which each person tells the story of a challenge they have faced, a time in their life when they were afraid but went ahead anyway. (Allows team members to get to know each other in a new way.) The exercise can be the inspiration for choosing/creating the singing telegram character.

This workshop also includes an innovation exercise and a debrief on what each person learned, what useful information they can take back to the workplace.

The performance raises the stakes for the participants and encourages them to bond as they move outside their comfort zone.

Innovation Through Diversity
Benefits: For culturally diverse workforces. Capitalizes on different ways of thinking and seeing the world, as a source of innovation. Helps team members understand each other, learn about individual strengths and discover how to use those strengths to work together more effectively.
Two workshops. Each is 3 hours.

Foundation Ukulele workshop:
Starts with learning ukulele basics so the group can play through easy songs.  Follow up with an innovation exercise: Each person thinks of their favorite childhood food and how they would market it today to a 28-year-old software designer. The group chooses one of these foods and writes an advertising jingle about it. Each group sings and plays their jingle on the ukulele for the larger group.

Debrief questions: Where did each person grow up?  What was their choice of favorite childhood food?  How did the diversity in the group help the team innovate?  How can that translate to the workplace?

Workshop 2: Innovation with the Singing Telegram

NOTE: You do not have to be a good singer to do a singing telegram. We provide a selection of easy songs, poems, limericks, rap songs, etc. that everyone can perform. A successful telegram is more about connecting and having fun than being a perfect singer.

The workshop starts with an exercise to get everyone thinking creatively. Eg. It is the year 2050 and cell phones have been replaced. There is a new form of communication that is much faster and more powerful. Design it and describe its benefits to the group.

Team bonding exercise: each person tells of a challenge they have faced, a time when they were afraid but went ahead anyway.

Working in pairs, and using the information gleaned from the team bonding exercise, create a singing telegram character for your partner, with a name, sex, age, color, select costume and props.  Select a song or poem and to whom the telegram will be delivered.  Perform the telegram for your partner, and then for the larger group.

Debrief questions: How did your upbringing and ethnic background influence your telegram? How did it help you to be innovative while creating your telegram? What did you learn that you can take back to your workplace?  What did you learn about your partner that could be helpful in your daily work?
